1.Traditional handicraft product

Lacquer was popularized and later perfected in Asia countries such as India, China, Korea and Japan. Lacquer technique has been developing and modernizing through many years and contributed to the world of fine art.

2. A time-honored handmade process

Each of our products is the result of a time-honored handmade process. It takes us 15 – 20 days and goes through 15 stages to complete one product. Not all products are successful in the first place, but many have failed to get a good product. Each case has 12 layers of lacquer, which make them durable, even in dry and cold weather. They are made to last!

3. Natural lacquer (resin from lacquer tree)

Despite industrial materials to produce lacquer, La Sonmai artisans committed to using tradition of harvesting lacquer which dates back more than twenty centuries. Obtaining the lacquer and crafting lacquer ware is a process that requires knowledge, patience, ingenuity and foresight, whose result is a valuable and durable material to make delicate products.

4. Special materials

The final product must be pleasing to the eye and not lack in quality of design. To create different aspects and colors in one design, the artisans use special materials such as real gold and silver leafs, eggshells. These materials, with process of crafting lacquer ware, will highlight its beauty and glossy on the base of lacquer ware, which makes each product an artistic and unique painting.

How it's made

Art of Lacquer

Lacquer Tree Sap

The original paint was taken from the sap of the Son tree, which were plant in Phu Tho Province in Vietnam. The sap then stired continuously within 3 or more days to make it usable and applicable on other materials.

Lacquer Steps

Lacquer paint is applied to the paint surface mutilple times to create different layers of paint. After applying and then drying process, the surface is smoothen by the stones from the rivers. The stones are the brushes in fine arts and the smoothening process is the way artisans draw the lacquer paintings.

Eggshells

The process of inlaying each piece of eggshell requires carefulness and patience. It might sound a little strange that they orderly arranged in random positions. The eggshell is sometimes shapened to create the painting highlights.

Hand-Painting

Sketching the details of the painting need to be done entirely manual. The sketching for details might take up to 30 hours to finish.

Gold & Silver

Pure gold and silver leaves are also used during crafting products. The leaves are quite delicated, therefore, skillfull hands are specifically required.

Color Creativity

The basic colors of lacquer are black, red and dark brown. Since the evolution of Lacquer Art, artisans in Lacquer techniques have developed more sophisticated colors to fully describe and express their feelings through the paintings. Thus, more colors are combined and new colors are used in various ways and details.
